I¦m so linking this thread for future reference. A picture perfect example of will-full textbook ignorance and talking head TeeVee science.
Only thing that bothers me is that the Japanese again must suffer so that you "intelligent" people have to relearn the lessons of the past, all to readily ignored.
I'm sorry when was the last time 4 nuclear reactors were subject to these conditions?
Yes nuclear power can be dangerous if badly operated (Chernobyl) but the Japanese reactors were built with the full understanding that this terrible day would eventually arrive and they have done a marvelous job of surviving. Yes they probably will never be used again but the cores are intact and the radiation is minimal, if it was severe then they wouldn't be allowing workers back into the site after a few hours exposure.
Nuclear Reactors are not the same thing as nuclear bombs. All nuclear reactors are not built like Chernobyl.
But please if your basing your knowledge off one or both of these ideas then please get a dummy's guide to nuclear reactors or something similar and READ it.
And we "Intelligent" people as you so interestingly put it dont want to see a single person suffer anything even remotely like this. You want electricty right? Fine, tell me which you prefer to use: 1) A rapidly dissapearing fossil fuel, which will cause prices to skyrocket, and will only last 40 years or so (probably less with the rise of China, India etc). 2) Renewables (wind, solar etc) which only operate part of the time and take up huge amounts of land and dont provide that much electricity.
If you live in a country that doesn't have nuclear reactors I would be interested to see how much power your country imports, I suspect a chunk comes from some other country's nuclear reactors. If you live in Germany or anywhere else that is going to scrap their reactors I look forward to you complaining how much electricity prices will rise.
Well the containment on at least one of the reactors and as for management an expert involved in the Chernobyl clean up stated that cost cutting measures at Fukushima made this situation worse and fears that corporate influence over the IAEA and other agencies could also make this mess worse.
